Bull's eye ...
It
was very concerning to hear the news that NASA could not locate
where the 6 tonne Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) fell.
NASA reported that it fell somewhere in the Pacific ocean and no
one will ever know where it landed. Hmmm.. What could have happened
if it had landed on one of the major metropolitan cities? It can
be a plot for another Armageddon movie.
Space agencies across the world take
a lot of pain to hit the bull's eye by launching a satellite into
the right trajectory and into the right oribit. However, if the
satellite malfunctions while in orbit, they do not have a pre-defined
plan to bring the satellite back to earth in a safe way. Most of
these malfunctioning satellites and other launch wastes remain in
the space orbit as space debris, space junk or space waste.
These space debris are a hazard to the existing satellites and to
the the earth.
Interestingly, these debris fall to earth
periodically. Luckily these are either small in size or falling
on places un-inhabited by humans. Moreover, these debris are burnt
to further smaller pieces during its re-entry into earth's atmosphere.
According to NASA, the chances of a debris falling on a human is
1 in 21 trillion. So be assured that the falling debris is not designed
to hit a bull's eye - a human, in this case. So, feel safe, when
the next debris, German telescope Rosat, is expected to fall between
October and December 2011 :-)
On the world front, Saudi King has announced
that women will be given voting rights soon. Looks like a step in
the right direction. Despite world leader's unhappiness, Palestinia
filed for a state recognition with UN council. Need to watch how
it will pan out. On the economy front, the debt crisis has crossed
the Atlantic and is now looming over Europe. The markets are feeling
the impact of the global debt situation.
