Century in Women's Celebration ...

March 9th, 2011 marked the 100th year in celebrating the"International Women's Day" also referred to as IWD. A century of celebration to recognize the women's contribution to life, society and political fabric speaks a lot about the maturity of the modern human society.

Now, IWD is an official holiday in Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, China (for women only), Cuba, Georgia, Guinea-Bissau, Eritrea, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Madagascar (for women only), Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Nepal (for women only), Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uganda, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Zambia. The tradition sees men honouring their mothers, wives, girlfriends, colleagues, etc with flowers and small gifts. In some countries IWD has the equivalent status of Mother's Day where children give small presents to their mothers and grandmothers.

While many countries use this day to recognize the role of women in our society, few use this to promote the social and political equality (also known as feminist movement) for women. The women's political and social equality movement has come a long way in the past 100 years. Now we have women participating in every imaginable sector and women leaders heading corporations and government in developed countries. However, this is still an issue in many developing and poor countries where women struggle to obtain basic freedom. Let us wish the IWD organization to take more roots and help these women to win their basic women's rights. As Roseanne Barrin said, "The thing women have yet to learn is nobody gives you power. You just take it." Remember Ladies and Girls, never let the hand you hold to hold you down.

In this issue, we have hand picked contents to recognize and celebrate the 100 years in the International Women's day celebration.

Silent Treatment

A couple were having problems and were giving each other the 'silent treatment'. Then the man realized he would need his wife to wake him at 5:00 am for an early morning drive to a golf match.
Not wanting to be the first to break the silence (and so lose the 'war'), he wrote on a piece of paper, "Please wake me at 5:00 am."
The next morning, he woke up, only to discover it was 9:00 am and that his friends would have left without him.
Furious, he was about to go see why his wife hadn't awakened him when he noticed a piece of paper by the bed. The paper said, "It is 5:00 am. Wake up."
Men simply are not equipped for these kind of contests.
