World and Women

Who is celebrating?

You would be knowing that the International Women's day falls on March 8th of every year. Do you know how many countries are really recognizing or celebrating this day as a holiday? Here is the list:

  • Albania
  • Armenia
  • Azerbaijan
  • Belarus
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • Bulgaria
  • Cameroon
  • China
  • Cuba
  • Italy
  • Kazakhstan
  • Kyrgyzstan
  • Macedonia
  • Moldova
  • Mongolia
  • Montenegro
  • Russia
  • Serbia
  • Tajikistan
  • Ukraine
  • Uzbekistan
  • Vietnam

This list represents 23 countries out of 194 countries in the world, which is just 11%. India, US and other developed western countries are not part of the above list.

It is true, a holiday is not the only or true representation of the celebration or recognition. In fact India's Upper house of parliament passed a bill to preserve 1/3rd of the lower house (181 out of 545) seats for women. So make your own opinion!

However do not forget to send a yellow rose or a note of appreciation or a greeting to a woman you want to recognize!

Who is losing?

According to a recent survey conducted among executives by Accenture (a management consulting firm) Men lost more jobs than Women during this global recession.

The survey was conducted with 524 executives from 23 countries and it was conducted between November 2009 and mid-February 2010 . While this has been an existing pattern in United States, executives from Australia, Canada, Germany, Mexico, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland and the United Kingdom reported more men losing their jobs than women during their restructuring. Indian executives reported that 95% of their layoffs were men. Interestingly, in China losses were reported to be split evenly between the genders. The only country which reported differently was Netherlands where 51% of women lost their jobs when compared to 49% of men.

Again, be prudent in reading between the lines and jumping to any conclusions. This statistics could be attributed to the type of Industry which were impacted during this global economic impact. The industries, which were primarily impacted, were manufacturing and construction, which are dominated by men workforce, while the industries dominated by women such as health care and education were not severly impacted!
