Celebrating Alexander Calder: Image credit: mobile-wallpapers.ws

Alexander Calder is the inventor of the abstract sculptures also known as "mobiles". A mobile is a type of kinetic sculpture constructed to take advantage of the principle of equilibrium. It consists of a number of rods, from which weighted objects or further rods hang. The objects hanging from the rods balance each other, so that the rods remain more or less horizontal. Each rod hangs from only one string, which gives it freedom to rotate about the string. Mobiles are popular in the nursery, where they hang over cribs to give infants something to entertain them and give them external visual stimulation.

Garden with Caution

The unofficial summer has begun and your landscaping activities may be at its peak. When you are busy gardening, mulching, weeding, or mowing beware of our deadly reptile friends. Recently, a Lewiston, Ohio man was bitten by a rattlesnake in the Lawn and Garden section at a local Wal-Mart when he was buying mulch. Now, news is coming out that similar cases had occurred but not widely reported at various stores in many states. The snakes which took shelter in Wal-Mart can take shelter in your backyard too. You can do few preventive things to keep yourself and your family safe. Avoid risky behaviors like swimming in a lake or river, sticking hands into holes or crevices and avoid camping in risky places. Keep your lawns properly mowed and avoid walking into a tall grass or bush. Use extreme care in drought conditions as snakes seek water under your garden hose, swimming pool, or under your air conditioning unit. In spite of all precautions, if you still discover a slithering friend, don't handle the situation on your own. Call your nearby animal control agency for help. Have a safe gardening season!

This month marked the bust of another much hyped IPO - Facebook. The shares which were expected to double its value on its launch went sour and started losing its ground. Now investors are suing various parties to see whether they can recover their losses in any way. It will be an interesting tussle to watch. Another important event which occurred in this month was the successful launch of Space X Falcon 9 rocket and docking of Space X Dragon capsule with the International Space Station. This will be an important moment for the private space travel in the days to come. By the way, are you aware that you may have to pay extra money to seat your loved ones next to you in airplanes. Due to its declining profits, airlines are selling the window seats, which are in demand, for a higher price than the aisle seats. This means that if you are a family and would like to be seated together then either you have to pay a higher price for the window seats or decide to be seated separately during the travel. This new policy has generated a furore among the traveling public but airlines blame this all on their declining profits. Watch your airline policy before you book your tickets for this summer.
