Take Five !
How
many friends do you have in your Facebook, Twitter. LinkedIn and
other social networks? Is it in ones or tens or hundreds or thousands?
Do you stay up to date with all of them? A survey conducted by Robin
Dunbar, Professor of evolutionary anthropology at Oxford University,
found that irrespective of the number of connections, people maintain
meaningful relationships with only a maximum of 150 people. This
is the "Dunbar number" he theorized in 1990. Dunbar discovered
a correlation between an animal's neocortex size (part of the brain
which processes language and conscious thought) to its social group
size. Based on human's neocortex size he computed that humans can
only keep a maximum of 150 people in his group. When he consulted
the anthropological records for evidence, he found that the size
of a hunter-gatherer society was 148.8 and the average company size
in an army (Rome, Soviet, Spain) was around 150! So, this has shown
that having thousands of connections is really meaningless :-(
Further, Dunbar continued his behavioral
research through qualitiative interviews and surveys and discovered
more patterns in human behavior. He found that one's social group
is repeatedly factored by 3 for more relevance. In modern terms,
the Dunbar number (150) is the number of people you may be inviting
for your large parties and weddings, but these are not the people
you may be interacting on a regular basis. The number of people
who you interact (meet, call, chat) on a periodic basis is only
50. 50 is the number of connections you may meet (call, chat) and
spend time but you don't turn to them for help. You turn to help
with only 15 in your group. However, you do not treat this 15 as
your confidant/confidante (a person to whom you are willing to confide
or share secrets). The number of confidant/confidante in your group
is only 5! So, take a pause and identify your 5 among your hundreds/thousands!
Right now, US Presidential election campaign
is at full steam. A recent survey found that 52% of Americans have
expressed small to significant stress due to the upcoming election.
This is not a huge surprise as this election will be remembered
for a long time for its controversies, allegations, counter-allegations
and unconventional campaigns. In this edition, we have covered some
very funny candidate quotes from Primary till date. For the first
time, this election is testing a reality TV popularity against a
mainstream political popularity. Not sure, whether this is a preview
to future contests? Irrespective of the stress, history is waiting
for the winner - the first reality tv celebrity president or the
first woman president! Let us wait for the people's verdict.
In this edition, we have picked contents
